Hiking on Zettersfeld

A ride on the Osttirodler Alpine Coaster

The Osttirodler is an all-year round toboggan style alpine roller coaster. Take the Hochstein cable car ski lift to the Moosalm. From there you will race down the mountain at speeds of up to 40kph on a 2.7km long scenic track which winds through forests and has spectacular views over Lienz.

Driving on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road

Only open in the summer months, the Grossglockner High Road which begins in Heiligenblut is pure driving bliss! Incredible views of the highest mountain in Austria and the Pasterze Glacier can be enjoyed on one of the most scenic and highest roads in Austria. The road is 48km long with 36 turns.

A walk or climb in the Galitzenklamm

Formed over millions of years the Galitzenklamm is a steep canyon filled with gushing waterfalls. A secure wooden walkway with viewing platforms allows visitors to experience the gorge close up. Klettersteig climbing (via ferrata), a high ropes and zip line course, a water park for the children and an excellent restaurant make this a great day out for the whole family.

Cycling on the Innichen to Lienz Drau Cycle Path

Take a one-way train from Lienz to Innichen in Italy. Hire bicycles can be picked up in Innichen. After exploring this small traditional town in the Dolomite Mountains, you cycle the Drau cycle path from Italy all the way back to Lienz – most of which is downhill all the way! Easy cycling which is suitable for the whole family. 

A visit to Aguntum Roman Museum

Aguntum was a Roman trading town that existed before the town of Lienz. The ruins lie on the East side of the town and are extremely well preserved. The site is also a working excavation site which is uncovering new finds all the time. The ruins are accompanied by a modern museum which gives a fascinating insight into how life was here more than 2000 years ago.

Loacker confectionery museum and gift shop

Located in the town of Heinfels – 20mins drive south of Lienz, chocolate lovers can visit the Loacker confectionery museum. Loacker produce chocolate wafers which are exported worldwide. Of course this can be followed by a visit to the gift shop to take some goodies back home with you.

Schloss Bruck Castle

Schloss Bruck is the hallmark of Lienz and can be viewed day or night from just about anywhere in the Lienz valley. The castle is home to the Museum of Lienz and houses many pieces of art and sculpture, most of which originate from this region of Austria. You can also learn about the history of Lienz.

A visit to the Lienz town market

The Lienz town market takes place in the old part of the town every Friday (1pm-5pm) and Saturday (9am-1pm). At this lively market you will see local producers selling their goods which include meat, bread, cheese, fruit and vegetables as well as drinks, food and gifts.

Day trip to Wildpark Assling small zoo

Located in the district of Assling just south of Lienz, the Wildpark Assling is a hit for the whole family. Over 300 animals native to the Alps can be viewed here in their natural habitats. Visitors follow a trail which runs through the park. An alpine coaster, a children’s play area and a fantastic restaurant make this a great day out for everyone.

Eating ice cream on the Main Square

Visitors should definitely enjoy an ice cream, a delicious cake, or a cold drink on the main square of Lienz in one of the outdoor cafes at least once during their stay. During the summer months free concerts featuring traditional local music can be seen on Sunday nights, Tuesday nights and Friday nights.
